Give Blood, Save Lives

A Fixer from Warwickshire is using his celebrity status to encourage people to donate blood to help save lives.

Mr England 2009 Andreas Kattou (25) from Rugby is campaigning to encourage people to give blood, after losing his 15-year-old cousin to a heart attack.

His story was shown on ITV Granada Reports in July 2010.

‘I thought a lot about what I could do, and giving blood, for me that’s a big thing,’ explains Andreas.

‘Knowing that I could save a life, or two lives, and prevent other families from going through what my aunty and uncle did.’

With the help of Fixers, Andreas created a short advert depicting a dehydrated man denied of water by another man who has eight pints.

The bottles of water represent the eight pints of blood everyone has in their body.

‘We wanted people to think how easy it is to hand over a bottle of water and then realise that it’s the same with blood.

‘It’s a brilliant way to get the message across to the public.’

In the broadcast piece, Andreas speaks to Jane Firth, a woman who owes her life to blood donors following the birth of her child Ella.

‘Ella was born and everything was fine but then I started to bleed. I woke up four days later in a critical care unit.

‘I’d received over 14 units of blood, and if it hadn’t been for that transfusion, I would have died.’

The NHS needs 7,000 units of blood every day, and because blood components have a short shelf-life, they need to make sure they have a regular supply.

Pam Prescott from the NHS Blood and Transplant service supports Andreas’ campaign, saying:

‘The more young people we can get through the door to donate the better, and if Andreas can do that with his story, then great.’
