Reject Neglect, Reduce Abuse

Reject Neglect, Reduce Abuse

A group of Fixers, including 16-year-old Zain Afzal, are taking a stand against neglect and abuse, after a survey that was conducted by Croydon Youth Council revealed local young people have strong concerns about the issues.

Creating wristbands and workshops with the help of Fixers, they hope to raise awareness and educate young people in how to ‘reduce abuse’ and ‘reject neglect’.

‘We wanted something we could hand out as part of our project, which looks at how bad treatment such as neglect and abuse can affect young people,’ says Zain on the decision to use wristbands to promote their message.

‘I haven’t been affected by this issue but I know that it is a widely recognised and sensitive topic that affects many.’

Both neglect and abuse can be physical and emotional, and can have a detrimental impact on a young person’s development, something the Fixers want to raise awareness about.

The group involved in this project are taking their 'reduce abuse, reject neglect' message around schools and youth clubs, and say both their informative message and wristbands have been a hit among 11-16 year olds.

‘The audience responded well and interacted with us which is what we intended with this idea. They said that even though it was a sensitive issue, which we thought might be a game changer, our workshops were a success.’

They hope this project will educate young people about the signs of abuse and neglect and encourage them to seek help if they feel they, or someone else, may be suffering.

Zain says, ‘We are trying to help young people who don’t have information about things like neglect, and give them details of organisations that could help.’
