Know your rights!

Hannah wants young people to know their rights!

A group of volunteers have made a parody film to raise awareness about young people’s rights in healthcare.

Hannah Fletcher, 18, is one of a group of people from Blackpool, who is concerned that children are not being made aware of their rights within the NHS.

The hospital volunteers, many of who are also regular patients, have joined forces with Fixers in a bid to highlight children’s rights such as confidentially, consent, and feedback.

'The volunteers know a lot about hospitals, what services are available and share their views about the services on offer,' explained Hannah.

‘The young people in the group didn’t realise what their rights were and thought if they didn’t know, then how many other children didn’t understand their own rights in healthcare too.’

The group want young people to feel empowered and have the confidence to speak up for themselves.

With the help of Fixers, the group have created a short film titled ‘You have Rights!’ to provide young people, under 16, with the basic facts and signpost them to places where they can find out more details.

Hannah’s film explains how young people’s information, when shared with a healthcare professional, is protected and kept confidential. It also outlines that, at any time, it is possible to ask for more information regarding procedures and give feedback to help improve the different services available.

‘We’ve created a short video, which is a parody of the old social guidance films. We wanted something a bit silly to highlight that we feel it should be obvious that young people should have their say in decisions affecting their own healthcare,’ explained Hannah.

‘We want to share it via social media and for it to be promoted by organisations that look after young people. Hopefully it will help professionals feel more confident to share this information too.’
