‘I knew that I wasn’t supposed to be born female and I didn’t really understand it until I was about 15. That’s when I eventually managed to come out. I had this massive weight taken off my shoulders.’

Alex Jones (17) from Newport is helping people understand what it means to be transgender to end discrimination and help others like him come out with confidence.

His story was broadcast on ITV News Wales at Six on Thursday 4th June.

In the TV piece he speaks about some of the negativity he faced and his desire to educate people on the topic.

‘I was born a girl, but for the last two years I have been living as a young man,’ explains Alex.

‘There’s a lot of ignorance about the term transgender. My project is to end the negative stigma towards the transgender community and help other transgender people come out when they want to.’

With Fixers, Alex has helped create a poster to spread his message and improve understanding.

Kate Hutchinson from Wipe Out Transphobia also features in the broadcast piece in support of Alex’s campaign.

‘I actually came out twice,’ she says.

‘The first time was back in the late 90s, when I was in my late 20s. It was hard then, social attitudes were different. I then came out again about two-and-a-half years ago.

‘I think the poster gives a really positive message and it’s important to get that education to schools, to children and to the public to make it less of a taboo.

‘We shouldn’t be ashamed of who we are.’
