‘It didn’t cross my mind that I could be homeless. I just left with two bags of clothes. I felt really isolated and alone and as if no-one understood what homelessness means.’

After finding herself without anywhere permanent to live following a relationship breakdown, Leah Scott (22) from Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire wants others to be aware that homelessness can happen to anyone.

Her story was broadcast on ITV News Wales at Six on Thursday 21st May.

In the TV piece, Leah draws attention to sofa surfing as a form of hidden homelessness and speaks about a film she’s created, with the help of Fixers, to encourage those who do find themselves in a difficult situation to seek help.

‘I don’t think people consider sofa surfing as homelessness because you’re sharing a house with a friend or family member,’ Leah says.

‘Having a home now is really important to me.

‘I’d be happy if our Fixers project helped just one person realise that if you are a sofa surfer you can go out and ask for help.’

Beth Howell from the Pembrokeshire Care Society also appears in the broadcast in support of Leah’s campaign.

‘What we see the most in Pembrokeshire is hidden homelessness,’ Beth explains.

‘It’s much bigger than it seems. Over 1000 people came through the door last year for advice and assistance.

‘Homelessness is a big issue around here, although most of it is behind closed doors so nobody knows about it.’
