Campaign: | To improve understanding of self-harm and urge those affected to seek help |
My group and I feel self-harm isn’t discussed as openly as it should be.
Although none of us have personal experiences, we have seen how it can affect others and believe that young people would benefit from a better understanding.
One thing we’ve noticed is that some people don’t realise self-harm can be a symptom of other issues – like mental illness or abuse.
With Fixers, we’ve helped create a film to address this.
Our aim is to help people better understand self-harm, so it becomes less of a taboo subject. We also want to encourage more individuals who are affected by it to come forward and seek help.
Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Our Fixers project is supported by Simplyhealth which helps people care for their everyday health through health cash plans, dental plans and independent living solutions.
With over 140-years of history in the healthcare market, the organisation is working in partnership with Fixers to help support young people to have their voices heard on the subject of mental health.
Rachel Whillans is a Pupil Support Teacher, who has provided access to young people undertaking alternative curriculum classes at the school.

Our Fixers film was screened to students for a week during assemblies at Wallace High School. You can read some of the feedback we received below.
‘People with problems should go and get help, not hurt themselves. It has changed my view as I used to think that people did it for attention but really it’s not. People do it because they have problems. I plan to share it with others so they can get help.'
‘It is a shame all around the world there are people self-harming. The film was very well documented and well put together. It has changed my view as I didn’t really know a lot about it. This film has shown me the reasons why people self-harm.'
‘The film has affected me as it allowed me to see the issues that people have to make them turn to self-harm. It has made me more aware that it happens all the time and that there is help out there for people who are going through it and the friends and family around them on how to deal with the situation. It has also made me more open to the dangers of self-harm and how it can lead to more dangerous things if the people don’t get the help that they need.’
