‘When you come back off a rescue, it gives you that satisfaction of being able to help somebody. You know you're there doing good.’
After launching a Fixers campaign to recruit young volunteers for Maryport Inshore Rescue Service four years ago, town resident Gary Hampson says his project has helped secure the service’s future.
His story was broadcast on ITV News Lookaround on Thursday 4th June.
In the television piece, 26-year-old* Gary, who signed up to the service in 2006, explains how important his campaign has been in bringing in new faces.
‘It was designed to attract the younger people of Maryport as it is a very physical emergency service and at the time we did have quite a few members that were of an older generation,' explains Gary.
‘We made a leaflet for schools showing the kind of work that we do.
'As a result of the campaign, we were able to recruit some new members.’
Nick Hayton signed up to the service, which has seen a 25-30 per cent rise in young volunteers, after Gary visited his sixth form.
Featured in the broadcast, he says: ‘It made me think about what I could do and what I could be a part of for the town and to help people out.
'It was something I felt I needed to carry on and when they were asking for younger people, I thought I could possibly be useful to the service.’
