Campaign: | To make people smile with random good gestures |
Everybody seems wrapped up in their own lives these days, but sometimes it’s good to forget about your worries and do something that puts a smile on your face.
With this positive feeling in mind, my team and I organised a Good Gestures Day in Market Square, Sunderland on Saturday 10th May.
The event, which was also held in other parts of the country, involved us giving random members of the public free high-fives, hugs, fist bumps and handshakes to put them in a good mood.
The inspiration behind the campaign is Stephen Sutton, who had incurable cancer.
Despite his poor health, he continued to be positive about life and make others happy.
I’m currently studying at university in Sunderland, and although I didn’t know Stephen personally, I was inspired to take part in this event after learning about his remarkable story.
He is a true inspiration and a role model to people around the world. That's why we're aiming to make this event a great success!

Our event was so much fun and I even feel like I've made some really wonderful new friends! We tend to be too suspicious of each other these days which is why I believe this campaign is so great - most people are kindhearted, we just don't get the chance to show it!
Feedback from members of the public was great! You can read some of these comments below:
'I think it's a great idea! All this positivity is bound to be uplifting and it can lift you out of any situation. Someone could have been walking around with the weight of the world on their shoulders and out of nowhere they've gotten a free hug from a stranger. How could that not cheer someone up.'
'I think it's lovely to look around and see all these bright T-shirts and young people, making others happy.'
'I've never heard of this before but I think it's a nice idea!'
'It's great! You all look so cute in your T-shirts hugging people and fist bumping them!'
'You've made my day!'
