Campaign: | To clean up North Devon’s beaches |
As a keen surfer I spend a lot of time visiting local beaches throughout the year.
It’s upsetting to see these beaches continually covered in litter, with all kinds of rubbish and waste polluting the landscape.
Not only does this threaten the environment and marine life, but it’s also dangerous for people using the beaches.
I think more needs to be done to look after these areas along our coastline.
With the help of Fixers, my team and I are launching a ‘Save our Beaches’ campaign.
We plan to run beach clean events and hope other people will get involved to help us clear up areas along the North Devon coast.
Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:
Emily Cawsey | Shayna Roach |
Dan Cannon | Rhianna Howells |
Josh Hulse | Lydia Marshall |
Hannah Seymour | Lewis Andrews |
Lauren Eyles, Beachwatch Officer at the Marine Conservation Society, is supporting our Fixers project. She attended our beach clean event and agreed to be interviewed for our film to be broadcast on ITV.
Torridge District Council
Torridge District Council is supporting our Fix. The team let us borrow litter-picking equipment for our beach clean and collected the rubbish afterwards.

Record-breaking surfer Andrew Cotton supports our project. He helped at our first beach clean and contributed to a group discussion that was filmed for our broadcast piece.

January 2014
Our local MP, Nick Harvey, supports our Fixers campaign.
He wasn't able to attend our beach clean event but he did send the following message:
“Here in North Devon, we are lucky to have a beautiful coastline. So it really is a shame for the whole local community when our beaches become strewn with litter.
“I very much welcome community initiatives like this one being led by students from Petroc College and the charity ‘Fixers’ to clean up the beach at Westward Ho!.
“It’s wonderful to see North Devon’s young people taking the lead on an important issue like this. Untidy beaches are not only unpleasant and potentially dangerous for local residents; they also have a damaging effect on our wildlife and the local economy through lost tourism revenue.
“I am looking forward to meeting the group of young volunteers soon to see how their project is progressing. I would encourage any young people in the area to get involved in the clean-up project and do something good for their local community.”
We held our first beach clean event on Thursday 16th January at Westward Ho! beach in Devon.
Despite the wet weather around 20 people volunteered to help us collect rubbish throughout the morning. We were also joined by representatives from Surfers Against Sewage and surfer Andrew Cotton.
