I was a very shy teenager without much confidence. I didn’t really speak to many people and I used to have a negative view of myself.
Then, at 16, I discovered dance and all that changed. I found a way to express myself and my self-confidence and self-esteem grew. It made me feel good, that I could show people who I really am.
I want more people to experience how great dance is and to enjoy the benefits it can bring. It’s a great way to meet new people, so you can improve your social skills at the same time.
With Fixers, I’ll be encouraging young people to take part in weekly dance classes in the Wrexham and Flintshire areas. These practice sessions will lead up to a final performance and workshop.
Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:
NEW Dance The NEW Dance company supports my Fixers project. They are running the weekly dance classes and will help us put on a workshop and final performance at the end of the year.
Coleg Cambria, Yale College The college supports my Fixers project. We are hosting one of our weekly dance sessions there.
October 2013 The weekly dance sessions started on Monday 16th September. Here is some feedback from young people who have attended a class:
Naomi (18): ‘I find dance very energetic and enjoyable. It is a good experience and I like to have a goal to work towards. Performing to others lets me showcase all that I’ve learned.’
Bethan (17): ‘You learn a lot of different dance moves and meet plenty of new people. It builds your confidence. You enjoy it as soon as you take part.’
Kate, Rosian and Hannah (all 16): ‘We want to learn new movements and understand more about dance. We are excited to be a part of something.’
Me and my friends want young people to know that calories aren't the enemy!
