Campaign: | To encourage people to surf, regardless of their abilities |
I have always been a huge lover of the water and the beach. I am passionate about surfing, and I love to show other people how enjoyable it is.
I think a lot of people feel that they are restricted by their abilities when it comes to trying new things, and I wanted to show them that this doesn’t have to be the case.
For my Fixers project, I decided to teach surfing lessons to young people who have a physical or a learning disability. I want people to think positively about what they can do, and show how enjoyable water-sports can be no matter who you are.
Here is a list of Fixers who helped me with my Fix:
Brent Zillwood | Megan Mears |
Gemma Sanders | Madi Parkinson |

Mark Hill, Director of Freedom Surf
Mark appeared in my broadcast story to support my work with disabled people and helped to organise my surfing event. He says: ‘Surfing for disabled people is brilliant because it’s good for the mental wellbeing, general fitness, and you get to meet people from all different walks of life. In the water, there is no such thing as a disability.'
Steve Hillman of Cornwall Sports Partnership
Steve supported my Fixers project by helping to organise the surfing competition I held. Here’s what he had to say: ‘The work that Hayley is doing is really important because young people with disabilities probably wouldn’t even try to access the beach, so to get them across the sand, into the water and on to a surfboard is a massive thing.’
Joanne Hillman of the British Surf Association
A thank you to Joanne who also helped to organise the surf competition.

June 2011
I was honoured to be an ambassador for The Big Summer Fix West Country. I waspresented with an award by former Eastenders actor David Proud, and received my award as a representative of my region. Click here to watch the video.
October 2010
I held a successful surfing competition so my students could show everyone what they had learned. Held at the Retallack Resort & Spa, over 30 participants used the Loop Flow Ride surf simulator and won medals and prizes for their achievements.
Joanne Hillman, from the British Surf Association, said, 'I think holding the event at Retallack was a big success; the instructors were wonderful and everyone who participated really enjoyed themselves.'
