Campaign: | I recorded a track with friends and made a music video based on the true story of a recovering heroin addict |
I’m a member of Chants, a social enterprise in Reading that teaches kids to make music to give them a more positive attitude. We were approached by a young lady who wanted to tell her own story.
She was a recovering heroine addict and had gone through some really tough times. She wanted to make other young people aware of the dangers of using drugs. She wrote a poem about her life and experiences, about losing trust in people, scraping money together to buy drugs, losing people she’d loved. We turned it into a song, and Fixers helped us to make it even more powerful with a music video.
We campaigned with the film in schools and youth centres. We want to show it to as many people as possible and let them know that this is real stuff that actually happened, that drugs are out there and can be a real problem. But I want to make it clear that people who are addicted to substances aren’t bad people, and we shouldn’t look down on them. If you were looked down upon how would you feel? That’s not going to help them get clean.
