Campaign: | To encourage young people caring for family members with substance abuse issues to seek support |
When I was about ten, my mum fell and fractured her back. It triggered the symptoms of fibromyalgia – a condition which causes pain all over the body.
I became her primary carer when I was 12. At first I really felt the pressure, but I received good support and that helped me cope.
I haven’t met anyone who is using a young carer’s support service because someone in their family has substance abuse issues.
People think they’re not a carer when they’re in that situation and might feel scared to ask for help because they don’t know what the outcome will be.
I want to change that so I’ve made a film with Fixers to raise awareness and show that there is support available.
I hope it will be shown to children in both Primary Schools and High Schools so they will know what to do if that situation does arise.
