Campaign: | Encouraging young people to ask for help if they are struggling to live independently |
When I was ten I started getting symptoms of bipolar disorder.
I would be depressed for several weeks and then it changed to the opposite of that and I would get high mood swings.
The time scale changed, sometimes it would be a few weeks of each and sometimes it would be longer, like a couple of months.
I moved out for the first time when I was 19. I was quite unwell and moved out without telling my mum – I was really impulsive.
After a couple of months I got depressed really quickly and that’s why it was so difficult to carry on living independently at the time and pay the rent. I moved back home after two months.
With Fixers I decided to create a storybook based on my personal experiences, to show young people how mental health conditions can affect our everyday lives, and that you are never alone; all you need to do is reach out.
Lots of people with mental illness are struggling to live independently. I hope people will see that there is nothing abnormal about it and talk to someone before things become overwhelming.
