Campaign: | To highlight mental health issues in school so teachers are more supportive |
I have suffered from depression and anxiety. Before I understood what it was, I used to think I was the only one who felt like I did and didn't feel I could open up.
For a long time I was apprehensive about saying anything to anyone for fear of being judged. I thought that having depression was weak of me.
I think it’s important that teachers make it clear that depression is not a sign of weakness. It’s weaker to pretend you haven’t got a problem.
Luckily at my school I got help from Pupil Support and my teachers made themselves available if I felt I needed to talk. I think it’s important that all teachers think about students as whole people not just as pupils in school.
With Fixers a group of us have made film set in an exam room. We hope teachers will see it and that it will open their eyes to the fact that pupils they work with may be going through difficulties they don't know about and may need a bit of extra support.
