Campaign: | To help young people spot the signs of an abusive relationship |
I’ve experienced emotional and psychological abuse in a relationship.
It happened when I was younger. I met someone online and had no reason to believe anything would go wrong – he was so loving to begin with.
But then things changed. He started getting really angry and calling me names. He’d shout at me, accuse me of things I hadn’t done and he’d even threaten suicide to exercise control over me.
As I was new to relationships, I wasn’t aware that this wasn’t normal and it destroyed my self-esteem.
I isolated myself, stopped seeing my friends and didn’t attend school. Eventually I went to the police and he was convicted of harassment.
With Fixers, I want to help other young people recognise when a partner is becoming abusive so they know to leave an unhealthy relationship.
No-one should have to put up with threatening behaviour. They should be encouraged to acknowledge the problem before it gets worse.
