Campaign: | To encourage others not to treat people with disabilities differently |
I have a condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (Type 2) which is progressive and means I use a wheelchair.
It’s my view that people with disabilities are automatically categorised as ‘different’.
People expect us to attend separate schools or to only take part in activities with other people who have similar conditions.
But I believe we should all be considered equal and nobody should be treated differently.
With Fixers, I want to show that we’re all human - people with disabilities are just like everyone else.
Thank you to Jakub Wichrowski and Kasia Wichrowska for helping me with this Fix.
Terry Buckley, Clear Channel
Terry at Clear Channel supports my Fix. He hosted my billboard in Lisburn.
People 1st have supported me throughout my project and helped me to get in touch with Fixers. Anna Maria McAlinney, Personal Development and Employability Tutor at People 1st, said this about my campaign:
'Alicja is a bright and amazing young woman. She is a living testament that people with a disability are capable of achieving brilliant things and as such should be treated with the same respect and dignity that everyone else receives. It is wonderful that FixersUK give young people, like Alicja, a forum to present a clear message on an issue that impacts so many young people today.'
October 2015
My billboard received some great reviews from members of the public who saw it on display in Lisburn. You can read some of their comments below.
'I think this is a great idea to let everyone know about the situations disabled people face. It's amazing that someone could share this picture with society to make sure that the problems they face are not hidden. The billboard looks great and I think the message is perfect. Great job! We are all equal.'
'It was great to see Alicja's billboard up on the street near where I live. It's great and the result was a very positive and strong message.'
'Congratulations and well done! Keep up the good work!'
