Campaign: | To show others living with alcoholic parents that there is support available |
My mum’s an alcoholic and she has been for as long as I can remember.
It makes me very, very anxious. Even as a small child, if I ever heard a noise I’d worry about what it was – just in case she’d fallen over.
I’m never angry at my mum. It’s just the alcohol that I don’t like as it changes her completely. She’s never violent but she does become verbally abusive and that’s hard to deal with.
There were times when I used to feel very lonely, but now I’m part of a support group and am surrounded by other people who understand what it’s like to be in a similar position.
With Fixers, I want to shed light on the problems that young people face if they have to look after parents who drink excessively or take drugs.
I also want to show others, who are going through the same thing that I went through, that help is available.
(Anna is not my real name because I would like to remain anonymous.)
The team at The Children’s Society support my Fixers project. Lisa Scivetti agreed to be interviewed to appear in my broadcast film.
