Campaign: | To help foster carers better support young people realising they are LGBT |
I was in foster care for most of my teenage years and during that time I realised I was bisexual.
At one of my placements, I was very fond of the people, but I didn’t feel that I could come out to them and tell them about my sexuality, because I didn’t think they’d understand.
It made me feel very isolated and alone – like I was living two different lives.
For my Fix, I’m calling for better support and education for foster carers, so they can be understanding if they find themselves looking after a young person who is realising they are LGBT.
I’m helping to create a leaflet that will include key definitions and important information.
I hope that my campaign will ensure that this becomes a standard part of the training given to foster carers, both in Somerset and beyond.
Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:
Makenzie Ferrier
Amanda Edmonds
Ellie Dorrill
Libby McCaskey
The Somerset Fostering team are supporting my campaign. They’re planning to distribute the informative leaflet I’m creating with the help of Fixers to foster parents in the county. They’re also allowing me to help at workshops where carers will gain a better understanding of LGBT issues. Elaine Ford, Team Manager for Fostering and Adoption, agreed to be interviewed to appear in my broadcast piece.
PROMISE Mentoring and Advocacy
The team at PROMISE are supporting my Fix. They introduced me to Fixers and have given me their backing throughout the project. One of their volunteer mentors was with me on the day we filmed the TV piece and they’ve said they’ll be able to distribute my Fixers leaflet too.
The Fostering Foundation
The Fostering Foundation are supporting my project. They've taken an interest in my leaflet and have asked me to speak with their foster carers about LGBT issues.
