Campaign: | To help preserve the quality of the youth service in Devon |
For many young people in Devon, the youth service is seen as a lifeline. A weekly interaction with a youth worker can be all it takes to prevent a minor problem escalating into a major one.
This is why it’s so devastating that the service is being cut. The local authority has decided not to operate youth services in 24 of Devon’s current youth centres – instead keeping 8 key hubs.
This is something that concerns me and the rest of my team. We’re worried about the impact these changes could have. For instance, whether it could lead to an increase in crime.
With Fixers, we’re creating a film to make decision-makers aware of the knock-on effects of their choices.
In an ideal world, we’d like all of Devon’s youth centres to remain under council management.
However, we do realise that hard times means compromise, therefore we hope to work with other voluntary or community groups to preserve the quality of youth work where we live.
