A Fixer from Crawley is hoping to expose the sporty side of pole fitness in an effort to shed its 'sleazy' image.

Her story was shown on ITV News London on Thursday 5th September.

Passionate about pole fitness, Paula Bines (24) wants to encourage people of all ages to look past the stereotypes and try the rigorous physical discipline.

She has become a Fixer not only to shake off the questionable image often associated with pole dancing, but to demonstrate that it’s highly effective in improving fitness and strength.

‘I want to change the perception of pole dancing. It’s now moved out of the night clubs and into the gyms, and I think everyone can benefit from this,’ Paula says.

The Fixer, who is now becoming an instructor after four years of training, says the sport has helped boost her confidence as well.

‘Before I started pole fitness, I was very self-conscious. I was a completely different person. I couldn’t stand in front of a crowd of people, let alone do what I’m doing now – teaching them. It has changed me.

‘I have got more confidence and I am so much stronger than I was when I first started. It’s just so empowering.’

In the broadcast film, Paula surprises players at Crawley Rugby Club, challenging them to try the pole and also meets with a fitness lecturer, who tests and confirms its status as high-intensity workout.

‘The perception of pole has really changed for the positive,’ says pole fitness expert Kay Penney, who is also interviewed in the piece.

‘What we are seeing here is a small demonstration that it’s available for everyone – in the fields, in groups, in village halls and it hasn’t got the perception from many years ago when we took it out of the gentlemen’s clubs.’
