By sharing her experiences of life with a mental health condition, ‘Hannah’ hopes to show others with psychological illnesses that recovery is possible.
Her story was broadcast on ITV News Anglia on Thursday 2nd October.
The 25-year-old Fixer, whose real name has not been used, first developed issues with her mental health at 15. She now wants to encourage others to seek help early, before they reach crisis point.
‘At my worst, I was hearing voices,’ explains Hannah from Peterborough.
‘They would say negative things and they would give me commands to hurt myself.
‘I was absolutely petrified. I thought that people were following me and I was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
‘I didn’t seek help as early as I should have done so I couldn’t move forward because I wasn’t getting the right support.’
With Fixers, Hannah is helping to create a film to tell her story. Using snapshots of her life, she hopes others will be able to spot when they have a mental health condition, so they can access the treatment they need.
Hannah also wants to show her film to those involved in mental health care, hoping that they’ll be able to use it as a resource.
Annie Jarvis, Development Officer at Peterborough and Fenland Mind, appears in the broadcast in support of Hannah’s campaign.
‘Anyone experiencing poor mental health can often hide away and not seek out help because they’re scared of the reaction they’ll get,’ she says.
‘This project is really valuable to us because it will increase awareness of poor mental health, and enable us to reach out to those within the area that need our help.’
Hannah adds: ‘I’m in a really good place now.
'I did feel at one time that I would never get through it, that I’d never hold down a job or get married, but all these things have happened - that’s because recovery is possible.’
