Making Their Mark

A group of young campaigners in a small Cornish town are improving the appearance of a local youth centre - and teaching people new skills in the process.

The Padstow-based group have been an active force in their area, pushing the local council for a skatepark in the past.

But their attention has turned to the local youth centre, which has been neglected following the council’s decision to stop running youth sessions there.

As part of their redecorating project, the group held a graffiti workshop on Saturday 9th February to teach local people how to graffiti professionally.

Following this, the attendees were allowed to personalise the walls of the youth centre. (You can see pictures of their progress below.)

By decorating the youth centre, the group hope to create an interactive wall space which can be built upon in years to come, leaving a legacy for future generations.

Talking about the project, lead Fixer Ryan Evans (18) says: ‘It is important that there is somewhere young people in the area can go. While the youth club is popular, the space does not look like a youth centre at all.

‘This is why we have decided to get everyone decorating. People can do whatever they want with the graffiti walls, and through professional workshops we hope we have taught them some new skills.

‘The workshop was very popular, and I hope this has started something unique in our area.’

The group is receiving help from professional graffiti artist, Stuart Taylor, who attended the first graffiti workshop.

Talking about the group’s initiative, he says: 'This project really shows an evolution of art. The young people have engaged really well with the project and have produced a fantastic end product. I’ve really enjoyed working with Fixers.'
