‘Most young people don’t think politics is relevant to them and that’s what I want to change.’

Ella Marshall (16) and her team from Bristol are encouraging more young people to take an interest in politics and have their voices heard.

Her story was broadcast on ITV News West Country (E) on Wednesday 12th August.

In the TV piece, Ella asks others her age what they know about politics and talks about her plans to make a film with Fixers to explain different political processes.

‘I first became interested in politics when I was 11 or 12,’ says Ella.

'I hope my Fixers project will empower young people to campaign for the things that they believe in.

‘The referendum on whether we stay in the EU is coming up very soon and there are others my age who will be 18 by the time it happens.

‘I’ve written a script for a film that I have made with Fixers which will hopefully inform young people so they can get involved.’

Ella’s Fixers film offers a candid insight into the British political system and how decisions are made.

The short animation explores everything from central government to local elections in a bid to inspire more people to engage with politics and stand up for causes they believe in.

Dr Lisa Harrison, Political Scientist at the University of the West of England, also appears in the broadcast, in support of Ella’s campaign.

‘If someone doesn’t know about a subject like the European Union or what the referendum means, they’re unlikely to vote,’ she explains.

‘So it’s very important we’ve got people like Ella to explain the key issues for young people.'

Ella adds: ‘We should all be involved and make sure that democracy is working for everyone.’
