Name: Anam Ali and Deeqa Ahmed
Age: 22
Year of the Fix: 2014
Location: Birmingham
Campaign: To raise awareness of female genital mutilation

We are raising awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Although we live in Birmingham, we are of Somali heritage and Somalia is a country that counts FGM among its traditions.

The practice involves intentionally altering or causing injury to a woman’s genital area for non-medical reasons. It’s invasive, can lead to health problems and is illegal in the UK.

With Fixers, we want to prompt open discussion about the procedure that has long been considered taboo.

It's a topic that needs to be talked about more freely if we're to see it decline.

By raising awareness of the issue, we also hope to encourage people to speak up if they think they know someone who is at risk of FGM.

Thank you to Ayan Ali for helping us with our Fix.
