Jack S

Name: Jack Simmons
Age: 19
Year of the Fix: 2014
Location: Altrincham, Cheshire
Campaign: To educate people about the complexities of Asperger's syndrome

I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome when I was very young. Having lived with it for so long, I often struggle with everyday activities and view things differently to others.

I see the world like a giant film set, thinking how it could be shot and what the actors would be doing.

This has often caused the public to judge me in the past, because they don’t know enough about the condition and how it affects people.

My Fixers campaign is to give others an insight into how those with Asperger’s see the world.

Hopefully it will help prevent misunderstandings and allow those with the condition to be seen as individuals.

Thank you to Charlotte Lancaster and Kane Allen for helping with this Fix.

Sale High School

Students from Sale High School were interviewed for my broadcast story, and the school supported my Fix by allowing us to film there.

June 2014
A story about my Fixers campaign and TV news item was featured in the Messenger newspaper.

I've also had really positive feedback from those who have seen my ITV piece. You can read some of these comments below:

Jackie:  ‘I saw Jack on ITV News Granada and thought him a very lovely young man. It is such a shame that people are so judgemental. I think this is because of lack of awareness of conditions. With Jack, and others like him, informing the public, hopefully more people will become tolerant of those who seem a little “different”.’

Kirsty: 'I have Asperger's syndrome. This is a really positive way of putting our struggles and difficulties. I am also all about understanding and awareness. I want to personally thank you for explaining the way we see everything and process the world.'

Lee: 'I relate to the movie set idea. I often feel like I'm living in an unscripted film. I'm glad I'm not alone.'

Jane: 'Love it! My son plays stories & characters in his head like a film set then writes them in novels.'
