Campaign: | To raise people’s spirits with gestures of goodwill |
Sometimes it’s the small things in life that can make us happy and you don’t always need to go to great lengths to put a smile on someone’s face.
This is one of the reasons why we decided to organise a Good Gestures Day.
A group of young people joined me to give free high-fives, fist bumps, hugs and handshakes to passing members of the public.
Ours was one of a number of events that took place as part of a national campaign inspired by my good friend Stephen Sutton.
Stephen and I went to high school together and despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer, he never let anything in life hold him back.
It’s this positive attitude that we wanted to pass on to other people.
This nationwide event was unique and I’m sure very few people had participated in anything like it before. It made it special and something we can be proud of.

I think the event was really succesful. We all got a really great response and everyone involved was so keen. Even people who were really busy would give us a quick high-five on their way past then walk on with a smile.
Everyone enjoyed it - the people giving out the good gestures and the people receiving them. It was all taken really well.
