Name: Amber Sims
Age: 20
Year of the Fix: 2014
Location: Midsomer Norton, Somerset
Campaign: To create a better understanding between adults and young people

Some adults have a very negative view of young people and often know nothing about what it’s like to be young and have a learning difficulty.

My team and I want to change this.

We want to start discussions that will help adults better understand young people like us.

We’ve all had negative experiences in the past, where an adult member of our community has left us feeling uncomfortable or misunderstood.

Perhaps they’ve felt sorry for us, or ignored us completely.

With Fixers, we want to come up with a training programme to deliver to adults in positions of authority, who interact with young people every day.

We hope this will improve relations between the generations.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

BANES Youth Service

One of the senior youth workers at BANES Youth Service has supported our Fix. She has helped us coordinate with Fixers throughout our project.

March 2014

We held our first training session at the Peasedown Youth Hub on Thursday 6th March.

We delivered our presentation to 25 adults and received the following positive feedback:

Local teacher: ‘It was amazing to see how organised and dedicated the group were and how well they communicated.’

Local councillor: ‘The group have obviously thought hard about what to put in their training package. It has made me aware that society does not always support young people with learning difficulties. There is a lot that needs to be done in the workplace to make jobs accessible to young people with disabilities.’
