Campaign: | To highlight the impact a parent’s binge drinking can have on their children |
I was around ten years old when I noticed my mum had a drinking problem. It wasn’t that she was drinking every day, but when she did go out she’d come back very, very drunk.
If she arrived home in the early hours of the morning, I felt like I had to care for her. I’d put her to bed and I wouldn’t go to bed until I knew she was asleep.
I used to feel very angry and hurt because it seemed that my mum was choosing alcohol over me.
When I was waiting for her to come home, I’d constantly think the worst – that she’d died or she wasn’t going to come back.
Just over a year ago I decided I’d had enough and told my mum that if she didn’t stop drinking I’d leave. She hasn’t had a drink since then and our relationship is improving.
With the help of Fixers, I want to create a film to raise awareness of when a parent’s drinking becomes a problem and the impact this can have on their children.
I want to encourage those who are affected to seek help.
Phoenix Futures, an organisation that provides services for people with drug and alcohol problems, supports my Fixers project. The team allowed us to film my broadcast piece at one of their rehabilitation centres. Two of their residents appeared in the piece and Leanne Smullen, a Drug and Alcohol Family Rehabilitation Specialist, was interviewed.
