Campaign: To get young people talking about dementia

I’ve seen first-hand how dementia can affect people.  It’s a condition that can lead to memory loss, confusion and mood changes and is commonly caused by the illness, Alzheimer’s.

I lost my grandad to Alzheimer’s. He was diagnosed when I was 11 and by the end he didn’t know who I was.

I think people are frightened of dementia, possibly because they don’t understand it and it’s still a bit taboo.

When someone has dementia it affects the whole family, not just the person suffering from it, so it’s important that it is spoken about.

For my Fixers project I want to get young people talking about dementia. I’m designing wristbands asking them to commit to trying to understand the condition.

I hope this will help young people and their families open up about how to deal with dementia, allowing them to make the most of the time they have with a loved one once they’ve been diagnosed.
