Name: Nick Buchan
Age: 23
Year of the Fix: 2013
Location: Rhayader, Mid Wales
Campaign: To encourage young people to turn their hand to local trades

I didn’t achieve much at school and never had particularly high expectations for myself.  That was until I discovered blacksmithing. It was something I really enjoyed and that instilled a lot of confidence in me.

I understand the frustrations young people face when it comes to getting work. It is my aim to make sure they realise they can make a living locally if they are able to ‘think outside the box,’ perhaps by trying a local craft.

My fellow Fixer Tom Robinson and I would like to hold workshops to give others in our area the chance to experience blacksmithing. We hope it will help them understand they don’t have to leave the area to find a trade that they love.

We then plan to show off some of the work completed at the workshops by hosting an exhibition at a local art gallery. It would be great if we could also take the work around other local towns.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

William Evans Hannah Findley
Molly Smith Llyla Louise Clings
Joe Sanderson  Dave Carruthers
Carol Harris Daniel Fox
Alastair Springate  Yasmin Short
Honsov Eshara Tom Robinson

Powys Youth Service
The Powys Youth Service have supported my Fixers project. They organised a group of five young people to come and watch me demonstrate blacksmithing. This was filmed for my ITV broadcast piece.

Hereford College of Arts
Delyth Done, Course Leader BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing, was interviewed for my ITV broadcast piece. She used to teach me at college and supports our project.

NPTC Group College

Rob Loupart, my old tutor, is supporting my Fix. I'm hoping his students will take part in my workshops.

March 2014

We've held our first workshops which was attended by local MP for Brecon and Radnorshire Roger Williams. He commented:

'It’s been a great experience. I take my hat off to Nick and Tom because they have been wonderful instructors and generous with their time.

‘I’m sure these young lads will look back on this experience and think that it’s been worthwhile. It’s been a brilliant experience for everyone.’
