I am a member of a group of Fixers that live in Sanctuary supported housing in Kent. We all have learning disabilities, and some of us use wheelchairs.
Sometimes it is difficult for people who don’t have a disability to appreciate our needs, and we have all had negative experiences as a result.
We want to help people understand our disabilities so they can see us as us. We want to tackle issues including being stared at in the street and being interrupted when people speak to us. We want people to treat us how they would like to be treated.
We are considering a poster campaign as a possible way of getting our message across.

Our group of Fixers
Sanctuary is the UK’s leading provider of care, housing and community services.
The not-for-profit organisation is backing our campaign and working in partnership with Fixers to help support young people across the country address the issues they want to fix.
With over 94,000 units of accommodation across England and Scotland, Sanctuary believe that building strong communities and inspiring people to make a real difference is as important as providing them with a home.
Jo Johnson, MP for Orpington
Our local MP, Jo Johnson, supports our Fix. He attended the event held to launch our posters and has provided positive feedback about our campaign.
The Walnuts Shopping Centre
The team at the Walnuts Shopping Centre are supporting our project. They have agreed to display our posters in one of the shop windows.
Bromley Council, Disabled Children's Team
Specialist Information Officer Pelin Ahmet loved the posters so much, she asked for 30 copies to distribute around Bromley!
April 2014
We launched our poster campaign at the Walnuts Shopping Centre in Orpington in Kent on Friday 25th April. Our posters will be on display in a shop window there for the next few weeks.
Around 25 people attended the launch event, including our local MP, Jo Johnson.
He said: ‘I think it is brilliant that these young people are making their voices heard in the community in this way.
‘Hopefully the posters will attract a lot of attention and make people think twice before judging others.’
