Campaign: Campaigning for more outdoor facilities for young people

For our Fixers project, we are campaigning for a disused plot of land adjacent to our youth centre to be turned into something worthwhile for young people and the community.

The space, which used to be a school, is currently derelict and attracts anti-social behaviour. We’re hoping to turn it into a space, which would offer a football pitch, a playground and a community garden.

We are all members at the Matt Talbot Youth Club, where 50 to 80 kids come in daily. An outdoor space would be very positive for the young people and would offer more activities to keep them busy.

With the help of Fixers, we are making a promotional DVD about our campaign and will collect signatures on a petition to allow the local community to show their support.

We plan to present both the DVD and the petition to the Belfast Education and Library Board, who decide how the vacant plot can be used.

Here is the list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

May 2014

After months of hard work, we’re delighted to have secured £500,000 worth of funding for the disused land near the Matt Talbot Youth Centre.

The money, which has been awarded by the Belfast Educational Library Board, was just the thing we needed to make this place a thing for future generations to enjoy.

We intend to build a football pitch on it and various other facilities that young people can get involved with.

Carrie Kane, youth worker in charge, was overwhelmed with the achievement.  Here’s what she had to say:

‘This area is quite deprived in many ways so to get this news was absolutely fantastic.

‘It’s just the boost the community needed. It means that members can venture outside rather than being stuck indoors and we can do a lot more activities with them.

‘It’s extremely heart-warming to think what young people can do when they put their minds to it. I’ve been working here for 14 years and this is definitely a highlight in my career.

‘Hopefully the money will allow us to make the youth centre something that young people can be proud of and use for years to come.

'We also want to thank Fixers because without them, this probably wouldn't have been possible.'

November 2013

I received the following feedback from a group of young people at the Saint's Youth Centre in regards to my Fixers film:

Pearse (15):

'It was really good to see young people trying to get something positive for their area, I thought it was very effective.'

Daniel (14):

'I think it was a really positive video because young people were trying hard to get facilities for their area.'

Shane (15):

'The video was brilliant as the group are really trying to get a pitch built in order to keep young people off of the streets and out of trouble.'
