Campaign: To educate people on the fire service and road safety

I recently completed a course run by the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service as part of their Phoenix Project.

As well as teaching the basic skills of firefighting, the programme also covered the consequences of deliberate fire setting, hoax calls and road traffic collisions.

For my Fixers project I want to pass on some of the things I’ve learned with the fire service so far.

I want to educate young people about road safety, while also raising awareness of the varied work firefighters do.

It’s a misconception that their only job is to put out fires.

My team and I are planning to create a short film. We’d like it to be shot from the firefighters’ perspective showing the efforts they go to to free someone from the wreckage of a car crash.

We hope it’ll encourage young drivers to take more care on the roads and appreciate what the emergency services do to help them.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

Ableie Phillips Alexandria Hobson
Andrew Ho Andrew Orley
Cara Davies Ceiron Edwards

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service
The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have supported my Fix. They have provided advice and expertise and allowed me to film at Wrexham Fire Station.

Eryl Owen, who co-ordinates the Phoenix course that I completed, agreed to be interviewed to appear in my broadcast piece.

Welsh Ambulance Service

The Welsh Ambulance Service supported our Fix by being involved in our film.

July 2014
Our Fixers film was shown to a group of young people in Conwy on 11th July. Here is what some of them had to say about our resource and campaign.

Michael (18):  ‘It makes you realise how easy it is to get distracted by other people - don't drink and drive.'

Lucy (17): 'Shocking - shows how reckless some people can be. Don't drive with dangerous people, be responsible.'

Jasmine (18): 'Makes you think twice and realise how at risk you are when in vehicles.'

Kyle (17): ‘Made me realise how lucky I am – I’ve been in a car crash.’

Joe (17): 'It was a good film that showed what can happen if you distract the driver and it really opened my eyes towards it.'

Ali (18): ‘It was very good and informative. Very well written and directed.'

September 2013

I attended the Fixers Road Savvy Forum in London.

It brought together Fixers, politicians, road safety experts and representatives from the emergency services.

Transport Minister Stephen Hammond and former footballer and TV presenter Gary Lineker were among those there.

The day was split into two sessions.  In the morning I took part in a workshop, discussing the key road safety issues facing young people today.

In the afternoon, a forum was held where politicians and road safety professionals were given the chance to put questions to a panel of Fixers.

Conclusions from the event are going to be presented to the Department for Transport in a ‘Fixers Green Paper’ as a contribution to the Government’s forthcoming Road Safety Green Paper.

Following my attendance at the Fixers Road Savvy Forum, I was featured on ITV News Wales to discuss road safety in young people. You can watch the full broadcast by clicking here.
