Terry

Name: Terry Braithwaite
Age: 21
Year of the Fix: 2013
Location: Kendal
Campaign: Providing support for homeless youth

I became homeless when I was 16 and slept rough for about three and a half months.

I felt scared, worried, depressed and frightened because it was my first time being on the streets.

It was cold, wet and damp - nobody wanted to hang around with me because I was homeless.

But with the help of my friends, I was able to find housing at sheltered accommodation.

The sheltered housing supported me through thick and thin, so I want to give back and help them.

I’m working with Fixers to create a communal area there, so people can chill out and socialise and just get to know each other.

Thank you to Dean White and Stacey Houlsworth for helping me with this Fix.

Manna House

The drop-in centre, providing advice, advocacy and help for those who are homeless, support my Fixers project.

Penny Severn from the centre also provided an interview for my broadcast story, shown on ITV Granada Reports and ITV News Lookaround.

March 2014

Impact Housing held an awards evening to recognise the positive community work their tenants have done.

I was delighted to receive a 'Fixers Award' for my project to transform an old room into a communal lounge in the supported housing complex where I live.

The room is completed and people are already enthusiastic about using it:

'I think it will be good to do something like watch a film in there. It will be good for the new people, because when you first move in you don't know anyone and it's scary. It's good to have somewhere to sit with people and not have to have them round your flat.'

'It's nice! Well done Terry!'

'I'll definitely come in and use it now that it's finished. We'll have to start doing stuff in here.'
