Megan M

Name: Megan Mennell
Age: 21
Year of the Fix: 2010
Location: Hull
Campaign: To better educate people on mental health issues

Living with a mental illness can be a struggle, and unfortunately most people go through it alone. I’ve had two episodes of psychosis involving delusions, distorted beliefs and hallucinations. I know how scary it can be, and if I’d have been better informed, it might not have seemed so isolating.

Not only would I have been more prepared, but I would have understood I was more susceptible to it than the other people around me.

With the help of Fixers, I created information packs to be distributed to schools, so that students and teachers could have a better understanding of mental health issues.

I feel the subject isn’t really understood or discussed, and unfortunately this means there are also a lot of stereotypes and myths surrounding some of the more serious issues. Breaking down these myths is something I really aim to do.

Dr Paul Blackburn,Clinical Psychotherapist

Thank you to Dr Blackburn, the clinical lead for the young people's psychosis project PSYPHER, for appearing in my ITV story to support my campaign.

Here's what he had to say about my Fixers project: ‘If young people are better informed then as they go through their lives and their friends perhaps struggle, maybe they will have some inkling about what’s going on and help them to seek help sooner. I think it’s awesome that Megan is prepared to do this kind of work.’

July 2010

I was honoured to take part in The Big Fix Live. My TV story was featured and I was interviewed on my campaign by TV presenter Natalie Pinkham. Watch the video here.
