Name: Richard Wheeler
Age: 25
Year of the Fix: 2013
Location: Winchester
Campaign: Raise awareness of visual impairment

I have a rare condition called Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, which affects just one in 25,000 people in Britain.

It causes irreparable damage to the optic nerve so, while my eyes look fine, I cannot see much at all. I can still make out odd shapes, but that is about all.

Since becoming blind, I have faced much discrimination - some people just refuse to believe I am even blind, and others purely do not cater for my disability.

That is why I'm working with Fixers. I hope to change the perceptions of people with visual impairment, and to raise awareness of the different types of sight loss people can experience.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Bethany Mitchell

Charlotte Swope

Morgan Christie

Natasha Harris

Sheila Verrill, Action For Blind People

Sheila supports my Fix. She agreed to be interviewed to appear in my broadcast film.

Response to my film has been positive and encouraging, below is some of the feedback I have received.

Bonnie:

'Thanks for sharing Richard! Every little bit helps us to understand what the individual is going through. God bless.'

Linda:

'Good luck Richard. I hope you meet more understanding people in the future. I can't imagine how I would cope in your situation. Keep on keeping on!'

Rob:

'I also have this condition and I am addicted to pushing the boundaries and doing things in life they say I shouldn't be able to do. This Fixers video led me towards the LHON Facebook groups - some months later a small group of us are now trustees of the LHON society which are operating in the British Isles.'
