Campaign: | To encourage support for asylum seekers |
I always knew that people sought asylum in the UK. It is always covered in the news, and you always hear people who have views on it.
But a lot of the time, the coverage is negative, and I feel a lot of asylum seekers take the blame for a lot of problems in the UK. This negative light does not help them fit in, which is sometimes really difficult to contend with as many asylum seekers have fled troubles in their homeland and do not want more trouble once they have tried to rebuild their lives.
The topic of seeking asylum is especially close to my family, who fled Nazi Germany to start life in the UK. They were treated well, but many others are not.
With the help of my friend Lauren Frend - and members of the Kent Youth Theatre group - I am creating a short educational film which will be distributed to young people in Kent, to show them the situations many asylum seekers often flee, and to encourage them to give asylum seekers a warm welcome.
Thanks to Lauren Frend (16) who is helping me with my project.
