Hilary & Vicky

Name: Hilary Chittenden and Victoria Foster
Age: 24
Year of the Fix: 2013
Location: South London
Campaign: Keeping libraries in use

We’ve noticed a sharp decline in the number of libraries in our area, and the number of people using them. This saddens us because we love libraries – they offer so many books, services, and activities which people are not or cannot take advantage of.

We both love libraries and we do anything to promote our local library branches in our spare time. The idea to champion libraries came from Hilary, as her mum works in public libraries and has so many interesting stories to tell about the people who are dependent on the services the library provides.

However, young people often distance themselves from the library. They may feel intimidated or they may feel as if there is nothing on offer for them there.

But we want to change this view and show young people that libraries are useful.

To do this, we are hosting a creative writing workshop for local children to get them writing creative pieces. The pieces they create will then be collated in a book which will be on display in their library.

Through giving young people something tangible, we hope they will take pride in their local library which will stock a book they created, and become return visitors in the future.

Thank you to Sanyu Kiyingi and Victoria Foster for helping us with our Fix.

Surrey libraries
Thanks to the staff at Bookham Library (managed by Surrey County Council) who allowed us to host our workshop with local children.

Gail Hard (from Dawnay Primary School, Surrey)

Thanks to Gail and the staff at Dawnay Primary School for giving us the space and support needed to run our creative writing workshop.

'It was a fantastic writing experience for children. Great creative stimulation and getting children to talk and live through the story actually makes their writing better.'

Dave Shelton - Children's author

Dave writes a range of children's books and helped us with our ITV News piece by giving his views on the importance of libraries.

May 2013

We hosted our first creative writing workshop at Dawnay Primary School, Surrey, to get children thinking about books and storytelling.

The feedback we received from the children was great! Here's what some of them said after the workshop:

'It was really fun. I liked drawing pictures and being able to add our own ideas to the story.'

'It was really interactive and surprisingly it wasn't like a school lesson which is what I thought it was going to be.'

'I like that I can take books home.'
