Campaign: Challenging media stereotypes of young people

As a young person myself, I don’t think the media gives young people an equal chance. It seems as though every time young people do something bad, it's the most important thing, but when they do something positive it gets overlooked.

Our group of Fixers want to change these negative stereotypes of youth, because we're not all bad.

It does get frustrating because it's the negative portrayal of young people that stays in people’s minds. That’s why the media can actually play a key role in stereotyping.

We want to remove assumptions that we think the press have of youth and give courage to those who feel they are subject to generalisations.

There needs to be a different perspective shown, one that doesn't paint all young people with the same brush.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Felicity Frank

Bradley Logan

Lewis Evans

Craig Birch

Darren Thompson

Lee Carson

Christopher Phillips

Susan Moffat

A special thank you to Berwick Youth Project, who have been supporting our campaign before and after we became Fixers.

Merrick Thomson, Youth Work Team Leader, Berwick Youth Project:

'Berwick youth project are very proud to have been a part of this groups journey of understanding the media and its power to influence both positively and negatively.

'Our hope from our youth work is to ignite enthusiasm and creativity as well as supporting our young people to have a voice within the community. This project has certainly given us a platform and from this we will keep supporting the group to do more.'
