Campaign: Teaching first-time parents to prepare healthy meals for their kids

We are a group of young mums and mums-to-be from the YWCA in Tonbridge, Kent. We became Fixers to help other parents feed their children healthily.  
 
We feel that many first-time parents have little knowledge of how to cook on a tight budget. So, with the help of Fixers, we are developing a series of easy-to-follow nutritious recipes and a broadcast film for screening in schools, local community centres and antenatal classes.

Our Fixers broadcast film was used by the YWCA to win a grant from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council to hold a series of cookery classes for young parents.

 

Practical lessons included how to cook nutritious food on a budget, understanding the government’s 5-a-day directive, and healthy alternatives to children’s sweets and additive-laden snacks.

 

Fiona Palmer, YWCA project worker was encouraging about our campaign, saying:

 

'The difference the courses have already made to these women’s lives is amazing. We’ve had girls who have never sat their children down at a table, or only cooked with a microwave or only made food out of a packet.

 

Now they are cooking roasts, getting their children eating broccoli and discussing the fat content of mince. It’s great, because not only are they eating well but their confidence has increased too.'
