Name: Jane O'Mahoney
Age: 22
Year of the Fix: 2013
Location: Newcastle
Campaign: Eating Disorders

I don't think there is enough understanding and information available to people about eating disorders.

I developed anorexia when I was 15 years old and a contributing factor for me was going to a competitive school. Though the school was very supportive, I felt there was tremendous peer pressure to perform well.

I was angry with food as ridiculous as that sounds. Because I didn’t want to eat it, I would binge on it. That was the worst part of it for me, was the binge eating, psychologically. You would just hate yourself.

There comes a time when nothing matters. You don’t care about people, you don’t care about education, you don’t care about your friends, you just care about listening to this voice in your head.

Working with Fixers, I hope we can use our personal experiences to help create more awareness about eating disorders, because I think there is a lot of misunderstanding out there.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

November 2013

The film about our campaign, which was broadcast on ITV News, was among nine Fixers films which won a Mind Media Award at the BFI in London.

Myself and fellow team member Erin Ruddick attended the ceremony. You can click on the photograph below to read more about our achievement!

September 2013

One of our team members Erin attended the Fixers Road Savvy Forum in London.

It brought together Fixers, politicians, road safety experts and representatives from the emergency services.

Transport Minister Stephen Hammond and former footballer and TV presenter Gary Lineker were among those there.

The day was split into two sessions.  In the morning Erin took part in a workshop, discussing the key road safety issues facing young people today.

In the afternoon, a forum was held where politicians and road safety professionals were given the chance to put questions to a panel of Fixers.

Conclusions from the event are going to be presented to the Department for Transport in a ‘Fixers Green Paper’ as a contribution to the Government’s forthcoming Road Safety Green Paper.
