Campaign: To try and stop underage smoking

As a member of the Bexley Youth Council - and as a sixth-form mentor - I get to hear all sorts of stories from young people.

 

But one story which I am shocked by is how open they are about underage smoking.

 

Recently I was stunned when one of the people I mentor was seen smoking, because I really did not expect him to give in to peer pressure.

 

A lot of young people do smoke, and I believe this is because they feel pressured to do so by others so they can 'fit in'.

 

But they do not realise what damage they are doing to themselves with this habit. It is not cool to smoke, and underage smoking is illegal as well as dangerous.

 

With the help of my friends at the Youth Council, we are creating a short film featuring puppets, which will show the effects of smoking on a young person.

We gave a presentation to Bexley’s headteachers on 17th September asking them to consider using our Fixers anti-smoking film in all Year 7 Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons.

 

May 2013

One of the team, Fixer Clarke Adams, met Dame Judi Dench after being awarded a scholarship to the Central School of Speech and Drama.

 

 

 

 

April 2013

Our story was featured in the Bexley News Shopper.

 

Filming got underway for our project, featuring a great range of puppets and puppeteers.
