Name: Ryan Evans
Age: 18
Year of the Fix: 2013
Location: Padstow, Cornwall
Campaign: To improve my local youth centre

Myself and my friends are passionate about our community and getting more things to do for young people.

In the past, we have pressured the council for a variety of things, including a skate park. But while the park is on hold, we have turned our attention to our youth club.

The council used to run services here but recently stopped them and handed control of the centre to a local group of volunteers. With their help, my friends and I have started to change the way the youth centre looks in an attempt to continue to attract young people to it.

Through a workshop, we trained young people to help graffiti the walls of the youth centre, hoping they will use their skills to continually decorate the club in years to come.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

Kieran Brinn

Jessica Bate

Callum Austerfield

Aron Ham

Tom Evans

Robert Lewis

Charlie Harris

Alex Stevenson

Kane Hoskins

Aaron Russell

We have had much support for this project, but we would especially like to thank professional graffiti artist Stuart Taylor who ran the workshops teaching us about graffiti. Following the day, he said:

"The day been exhilarating and interesting – an evolution of art! The young people have engaged really well with the project and have produced a fantastic end product. I’ve really enjoyed working with Fixers."

We also have support from our local MP, Dan Rogerson:

"It’s really important that’s it their space and they’re making it their own. You can provide all of the facilities in the world but if they think the place is boring or too official they’ll stay away. These young people are here giving their time, working together as a group. It’s great that a charity like Fixers can support them to do this."

We also want to thank Georgina Rogers from Padstow Youth Club and Rob Stevenson from Padstow Youth Action. Rob has said:

'We set up this new youth club for Padstow back in October as it was clear that the young people needed to have a youth club created out of what they wanted. They agreed on a common theme of being "Stronger Together" and this has reinforced the fact that they can achieve a common goal when they work as a team. It is very rewarding to have an organisation like Fixers listen to the young people and then deliver.'

February 2013

Our workshop took place at the youth centre and received excellent feedback from the attendees.

'It was really good and looks amazing! I’m proud of myself.'

'I’ve done some spray painting. I’ve loved it today. It’s made our youth club look so much better.'

'We really enjoyed it, especially the spray painting. It was great fun and the room is now a lot more colourful. We enjoyed doing something with our friends. It was nice to do something that I don't get told off for.'
