If you heard my story without knowing any background, you would probably think it is made up. It is not very often you hear someone say they have been living in a tent in some woods for a year.
But I have built my home in the woods in Hampshire as I had no one to turn to, and nowhere else to go. Today, I am turning my life around.
I grew up in the slums in Portugal and quickly became involved in crime. After spending two-years inside a young offenders institution, I knew I needed help, and moved to England with my Auntie.
However, things were not simple, and I could not find a job, find money, or live in the house I moved to. Soon after, things broke down, and I was homeless, making my ‘home’ in the woods.
But I always hoped I would get out of there, and now I have, thanks to support groups in Andover. I have seen so many homeless people in the same situation to me who are now rebuilding their lives.
I wanted to work with Fixers to encourage more help for homeless people, and emphasise to them that there is hope and help out there – you just have to find it, and keep believing.
Now I hope that I can take this film nationwide to influence the help homeless people receive. Then I will one day return to Portugal and try to encourage the children I used to live with in the slums to do the same.
Thanks to The Junction, I was given the ability to get this project made and my message heard
