Campaign: Encourage support for homeless people

If you heard my story without knowing any background, you would probably think it is made up. It is not very often you hear someone say they have been living in a tent in some woods for a year.

But I have built my home in the woods in Hampshire as I had no one to turn to, and nowhere else to go. Today, I am turning my life around.

I grew up in the slums in Portugal and quickly became involved in crime. After spending two-years inside a young offenders institution, I knew I needed help, and moved to England with my Auntie.

However, things were not simple, and I could not find a job, find money, or live in the house I moved to. Soon after, things broke down, and I was homeless, making my ‘home’ in the woods.

But I always hoped I would get out of there, and now I have, thanks to support groups in Andover. I have seen so many homeless people in the same situation to me who are now rebuilding their lives.

I wanted to work with Fixers to encourage more help for homeless people, and emphasise to them that there is hope and help out there – you just have to find it, and keep believing.

Now I hope that I can take this film nationwide to influence the help homeless people receive. Then I will one day return to Portugal and try to encourage the children I used to live with in the slums to do the same.

The following Fixers helped me with my Fix:

Eloise Silcock

Marcus Burns

Michael Fox

The Junction, Andover

Councillor Dorothy Baverstock

Councillor Dorothy Baverstock has been supportive of my Fixers project. She provided the following positive feedback: 'I was so very moved by the work that has been done by the young people, who have managed to turn their lives around and go on to help others to take the right road in life.'

Rt Hon Sir George Young, Member of Parliament

Sir George Young has been supportive of my campaign. He offered the following comment: 'I enjoyed meeting the Fixers at The Junction. There is clearly a need for more emergency accomodation for young people in Andover, and for a service like this provided by Fixers to reach out to young people in trouble.'

December 2013
My film was one of three shown to an audience of around 20 people at an event at The Junction in Andover on 6th December. Representatives from Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire Constabulary, Andover Foodbank, Alabaré and Simplyhealth attended.

As a group, we received the following feedback after the event:

Vanessa Brown, Care and Support Manager for Alabaré Care's young people's service:'I think that the young people voicing their opinions is more powerful than anything. I think the most important thing is to really nurture these young people to get their points across to their peers.'

Michelle Evans, Youth Engagement Worker at The Junction in Andover: 'The subjects of these films are very emotive. My response is to want to do something to make it better.'

Nicole (25): 'I think the films were brilliant. They must be put into schools as these issues need to be addressed.'

My film being screened at an event at The Junction in Andover in December 2013.
