I’m from Deighton in Huddersfield. It’s a deprived community and there’s a lot of crime going on.
There aren’t many jobs for people, especially young people, and postcode gangs are part of our everyday life. I got drawn into my local gang and after making some wrong decisions, I ended up getting sentenced to 2 years in prison for a street robbery.
It’s only now that I can stand back and see how being involved in the gang changed the way I thought and behaved. Money is such a powerful thing and it made me do things that I now realise were wrong.
Life is so much better now and I just wish I hadn’t had to go through all the bad stuff to realise that.
I'm producing a screenplay with the help of Fixers to show the reasons why people get drawn into gangs. It will also explain that there’s more to life than gangs and will encourage young people to focus on something positive in order to make a difference to their lives.
