Name: Dominic Mills
Age: 25
Year of the fix: 2010
Location: Huddersfield
Campaign: Letting young people know of the dangers of dealing in drugs

I’m from Deighton in Huddersfield. Like many places in the UK it’s a deprived community and there’s a lot of crime going on. There aren’t many jobs for people, especially young people, and postcode gangs are part of our everyday life. I got drawn into my local gang and, after making some wrong decisions, I ended up getting sentenced to prison for 2 years for a street robbery.

It’s only now that I can stand back and see how being involved in the gang changed the way I thought and behaved. Money is such a powerful thing and it made me do things that I can see now were wrong.

Life is so much better now and I just wish I hadn’t had to go through all the bad stuff to realise that. I made a drama film as part of my Fixers project which shows the reasons why people get drawn into gangs but also shows how there’s much more to life than gangs and by focusing on something positive can make such a difference to your life.
