When my father passed away I took on a lot more responsibilities than most people my age. For example, I support my 16 year old sister.
Being a young carer has a huge effect on your life. Apart from anything else it has a massive impact on your ability to socialise with friends. Most of them don’t understand.
I also know from my own experience that many young people are carers, but don’t realise it.
It’s not all bad. Being a young carer has empowered me and made me more resilient. But I would like more people to understand what our lives are like.
