Campaign: | To encourage schools to offer better support for bereaved pupils |
I was 14 when my mother died and it was a deep shock because, although she had been seriously ill, she had come out of hospital and was gaining her health back. But she fell ill again and then passed away from cardiac arrest.
After the funeral we just went back to school and I had very little counselling. I think schools should offer more longer-term support for those that are suffering from a bereavement because at the time I felt horribly alone.
You just ended up suppressing it rather than dealing with it. It took me years to realise that there are actually charities that solely help children that are bereaved.
I just wish that, at the time, there was someone to point me in the direction of those charities so I could have gone to someone who was trained to help me.
My team also includes Gloria Ijoorit.
I would like to thank Dr Katie Koehler from the charity Child Bereavement UK for appearing in my broadcast film.
