Campaign: | To tackle male suicide |
I was just 17, and my sister Toni was 15, when our father Paul took his own life two years ago. A taxi driver, Dad was 40 and full of life and laughter. We were left reeling with grief, disbelief and shock.
He loved barbecues and karaoke and walked into every room with a joke. We just couldn't beleive it. Bereavement counselling, and support from friends and family, has helped us to cope but it still hurts every day.
After his death, we were shocked to discover that men make up 80% of suicide victims in the UK, with men aged 40–44 at the highest risk. So we vowed to raise awareness and encourage people to seek help, for themselves or loved ones, if they have any concerns about them.
I really hope our film can help to minimise the number of suicides. People don’t have to end their lives to end a difficult situation. You can cure a cancer if you catch it early, before it becomes terminal. It’s the same with mental illness - and there is always help out there.
