Charlotte Richardson

Name: Charlotte Richardson
Age: 21
Year of the Fix: 2016
Location: Leicester, East Midlands
Campaign: To encourage young carers to aspire to a life beyond caring

I started caring for my mum, who has arthritis, and my dad, who has spinal problems, when I was 14.

I have to do things like taking my dad, who is in a wheelchair, to hospital appointments.

At one point I almost gave up on my dream of going to uni because it was so difficult combining my school work with what I needed to do for my family.

Luckily I had a teacher and a support worker who understood and encouraged me - and I got the grades I needed to go to university.

I have made a badge with Fixers which reads: ‘Young Carers Dream Too.’

I want to inspire other young people to see they don’t have to let being a young carer hold them back.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Benjamin Richardson

Charlotte Begg

Louise Bown

Lydia Green

Michael James

Spurgeons

Mandy Massey from the children's charity supported the project by providing an interview for the broadcast item.
